I attempted to update the Common Term but hit a snag. I received this notification at the top while editing: “Your message contains too many URLs. The maximum number of URLs allowed is 2.” Is this a recent change, or can it be adjusted? CT&A tends to have quite a few URL’s.

Darn. I tweaked this setting earlier to reduce spam. Usually, users post one or two links, while spammers often include dozens. How about posting your message first, then going back to edit the URLs? Have you tried that approach? Edit: I just tested it myself, and even as an Admin, it still blocks me. I'll investigate later when I'm using a proper PC instead of my tablet. Perhaps we can coordinate so I adjust the setting, you make your update, and then I revert the change.

We really outsmarted ourselves on this one.

Alright, I've opened up the limit. I'll keep it open unless spammers start causing trouble again.

It feels rather amusing to be treated like a spammer:shock: Thank you for adjusting that. I've finished my editing. Since I'm mostly doing updates now, I occasionally include URL's when updating. What I wonder is whether adding something without a URL would have been allowed under the old rules. If you prefer, you could revert the settings. When I need to add a URL next time, I can just let you know.

I think I'll leave the settings as they are for now, unless we notice that changing them back is necessary to keep spammers at bay. You're handling the list well, so we'll do our best on the backend to support you.

I just logged in and found 10 spam messages waiting (it had only been an hour since it was cleared). Nine of those posts contained more than two URL's; the tenth one had exactly two.

Perhaps all the spammers have returned after their Christmas holiday.

member_381064b05f 31 Aug 2026 #11

Grrr - I counted 150 spammers this morning, and many of them included multiple links. I'm changing the settings back again to see if it helps or if my earlier observation was just a coincidence. If anyone needs to include more links, please let me know, and we'll open up that specific post.

> member_6a2b8da741 wrote: > The last time I logged in, there were already 31 spammers... Yes, I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or what, but the spam count did go down. L4H - we're going to keep things as they are now. Just let me know when you need to make some adjustments. Sorry for any inconvenience. To explain further: every time we open the control panel to check for new posts, the first thing that catches our eye is the spam messages. With a hundred spammers around, it's easy to accidentally delete a genuine message because it gets overlooked. Similarly, to keep the board running smoothly, we remove non-participating members (essentially registered users who only post spam). We get several hundred of these daily, so it's quite possible to mistakenly delete a real person who has signed up but hasn't posted much yet. By keeping the allowed link count low, we reduce the number of spammers since they often use bots to register and post. After their posts fail a few times, they usually give up. Additionally, every time one succeeds in posting, they return with a new name and repeat the process.

Just as only keyholders can view or post in the 'keyholder' forum, is it possible to make posting links a requirement for a specific group membership that isn't automatically given to new members?

I was looking into this, but it seems our software/settings don't quite allow it. For instance, even with Admin privileges, I still hit the limit of three links per post. I'm searching for a workaround, though my options might be restricted because we're using the free version of the BBS.

Are there analog versions available?

He was indeed a spammer. I just deleted his signature which he had modified with more spam, and then banned him.
