Greetings everyone, I’ve tested a CB6K…it just didn’t suit me…and also a Bird Cage, which works (with some effort) but can become quite painful during wear. To be fair, I probably should have done more homework before diving headfirst (pun definitely intended) into the chastity world, as I was thinking with my brain rather than lower down, LOL. In any case, I stumbled upon Mature Metal’s website today. At first glance, their Jail Bird wasn’t quite as appealing to me as the Bird Cage so I passed it by. It was only after noticing how many sizing choices they offered that I wanted to kick myself for overlooking it! My main goal is to be able to hand over all the keys to my wife and not have to fret about getting jammed up in pain while at work or traveling, which happens with the Bird Cage. I keep one of the spare keys on me when wearing the BC, and deep down I know I can escape if needed…I want to eliminate that option so I truly understand that only my wife’s permission allows me out. My question(s) for current Jail Bird owners is…how precise do you need to be with measurements? Are there any crucial dimensions that must be spot on, or is there some leeway, etc. Without being overly bothersome, any and all guidance on what to measure, where to measure, how to measure, etc would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks ahead of time! -New

That's the beauty of a custom device. Based on my experience, I'd say you want the diameter accurate to within 1/8". I've owned jailbirds measuring 1 1/8, 1 1/4, and 1 3/8 inches, and you can definitely notice the difference between them. For length, I suggest aiming for within about 1/4", possibly up to 1/2" depending on the total length. The base ring diameter should also be accurate to within 1/8". As you approach your lower limit (especially with the base ring), you might benefit from smaller increments between sizes, though that usually takes some getting used to. I have a few rings that differ by only 1.5mm and can tell them apart, but if they were larger (i.e., not near my wear limits) I wouldn't be able to distinguish as easily. > member_cd64cfabd2 wrote: Are there any really critical measurements you need to have, is there room for error, etc. Without pestering too much any and all advice as to what to measure, where to measure, how to measure, etc would be GREATLY appreciated! To me, the most crucial measurement is the tube diameter. Second is the tube length. This can also vary depending on the tube's diameter. Eventually, the volume of the tube becomes a factor; you can trade some length for width and still maintain similar volume. Third comes the base ring diameter. It’s very important to get this right for long-term comfort, but it’s also (in my experience) the part that changes the most over time. Fortunately, it is also the easiest/cheapest component to swap out. I always recommend buying multiple base rings if you can afford it. Usually one in the size you think you need and another slightly smaller. If possible, get one a bit larger as well. It’s nice to have both for getting used to it, but also so you can switch to a bigger ring if you experience some temporary discomfort for any reason. I find that when moving up to the next larger ring, I can usually work through the adjustment without having to remove the device entirely.
I found that wearing my CB6000s and making necessary adjustments to step down in sizes while staying comfortable was very helpful when it came time to order my JailBird. Maybe I got lucky, but the length and diameter of the CB cage were perfect for what I wanted. That mattered because adjusting a JB cage is an expensive undertaking. Changing the gap and base ring size is easier. I also agree with Atone that having multiple base ring sizes is nice, including a double base ring.

When You start to approach your lower limit (especially on the base ring) you might be able to benefit from a smaller interval but that usually takes a while. I have a couple of rings that are only 1.5mm different and I can tell on those but wouldn't be able to if they were larger (ie, not near the limit of what I can wear). > > member_cd64cfabd2 wrote: Are there any really critical measurements you need to have, is there room for error, etc. Without pestering too much any and all advice as to what to measure, where to measure, how to measure, etc would be GREATLY appreciated! > To me the most critical is diameter of the tube. Next is the length of the tube. This can also change depending on diameter of the tube. At some point the volume of the tube comes in to play, to a small extent you can trade length for width and maintain the same volume. Third is the diameter of the base ring. It is nice to have them both for getting acclimated but also so you can switch to a bigger ring if you are having a little temporary discomfort for some reason. I find that if I go to the next larger ring I can usually work through it without removing the device completely. Well, I want the fit snug enough that I absolutely cannot get out, yet comfortable enough that I don't need to keep a spare key on me, but obviously not so tight that it falls off < LOL. According to the specs, the Bird Cage has a 2" inner diameter (ID) on the base ring, which becomes quite uncomfortable after just a couple of hours. The specs don't list the diameter directly, but the circumference is 5.5", and I could probably stand having a bit more room there; however, if the base ring weren't so painful, I think I'd be fine overall, especially since the length is also good. Also curious about the length. Everyone says to measure while flaccid, but erect versus flaccid differs quite a lot in terms of length. The BS cage fits my length almost perfectly, but they state an overall length of 6 inches, and I suspect that measurement refers to the outer radius of the curve of the cage rather than just base-to-tip on a straight line.
> member_cd64cfabd2 wrote: > Well I want the fit to be snug enough that I can't get out at all, Not really possible. The only way it would be remotely feasible is with a split or hinged ring. Even then, someone who knew what they were doing might manage it. It would be so tight that you couldn't wear it for any length of time comfortably. I don't usually make absolute statements, but I am pretty confident on this one. If you want zero chance of coming out, you need either a full belt or some sort of piercing. I believe you could get quite close to being unable to get back in though. This is almost good enough because what are you going to do once your hanging out (with the rest locked to your balls)? Sure, you could pull out. But then what? I experimented with my smaller Steelheart one time and could still pull it out. I wasn't able to get back in at that moment though. My technique has improved since then, but I doubt I could force myself back in easily now. It would certainly take a fair bit of effort. My goal is to eventually get a piercing. I want to *know* that I can't escape without the key (or breaking something). > member_cd64cfabd2 wrote: > According to the specs the BC is a 2" ID on the base ring which is very uncomfortable after more than a couple hours. You are at a real disadvantage here. Being larger makes it much harder to find a device that works well for you. My Steelheart has an overall length of less than 3" and only a 32mm diameter. It conceals very well in my pants and almost never shows any bulges. When I use the 35mm tube, which is the same length as other options, it occasionally shows. I can only imagine how much more visible a 6" long tube would be. Of course, a 6" long tube with a 1.75" inner diameter might fit me fine when fully erect.
Agree with Atone. Comfort comes first, security second. It took a few adjustments, but I got the base ring size down to something comfortable during the day and manageable even when attempting an erection. Anything smaller would make it difficult to get on and truly cause pain when aroused. Hinged rings weren't a viable long-term option for me. Could I pull myself out from the back now? Maybe on a few days each month (hey, I live in New England and yesterday was 5 degrees outside):o but I really don’t think I could get myself back in. Then there is always the issue of what happens if I do manage to get out and can't get back in. Well, my wife would be pretty annoyed with me. It could be a deal breaker, and I’m not ready to give this up yet.

Of course a 6" long tube with 1.75" inside diameter would probably fit me fine, when fully erect. Perhaps I was being too literal in saying "not being able to get out," but rather meant what you alluded to: that I don't want to be able to "cheat the system" and slide out or back in easily. I wanted the key to be the primary way in/out, more or less. As for the Bird Cage, if the ring were larger, and the cage had a slightly bigger diameter by just a touch, I think it would be perfect. Considering maybe a 2.5 or 2.75-inch ring and a 1.875 or 2-inch Jail Bird tube might be just about right. Shame it takes over 6 weeks for them to ship an order!
And perhaps I'm confused but how do you guys measure your cage lengths? Say you're 3 inches long when soft and 6 inches erect....which length should you aim for? My BC cage is 5.5" in total length, and I have plenty of room regarding length; it allows me to "grow" during arousal up to the full length of the tube. Having a device that's very close to my flaccid length seems like it would create problems if I started getting stiff. Just want to make sure I make the right decision.
> member_cd64cfabd2 wrote: And perhaps I'm confused but how do you guys measure your cage lengths? Say you're 3 inches long soft and 6 erect....you should get which length? I am a "grower" not a "shower." Flaccid, I am around 1 3/4", so I have a 2" long cage. I prefer to "stifle the stiffy"
So what happens when you get aroused/erect? Is it painful???:?:
> member_cd64cfabd2 wrote: So what happens when you get aroused/erect? Is it painful???:?: For me, no. Maybe some discomfort with an attempted erection but not outright pain. Not sure I would be able to hide something like the CB Curve in my jeans though. My JB is very discreet under my clothes and since I am locked 24/7 that matters a lot. If and when I get permission for a full erection, it is at my wife’s discretion.;)
My Bird Cage actually hid fine under clothes so that isn't the biggest concern for me...I just want it to be comfortable enough that I can give her all the keys and not have to worry about pain at work or elsewhere. How much extra room do you have in terms of length inside the cage when flaccid?
"For me, it's about a quarter of an inch. "
"So essentially... I should be looking for a cage that is just slightly longer than my flaccid length? That's an interesting point and helpful to know, because I probably would have picked one that was much too long. "
> member_cd64cfabd2 wrote: > So essentially... > > I should be looking for a cage that is just slightly longer than my flaccid length? That's an interesting point and helpful to know, because I probably would have picked one that was much too long. Actually, no. MM suggests subtracting 1/4 inch from your established flaccid measurement when choosing the cage length. This accounts for the space between the cage tube and the base ring. It isn't an exact science, though. I ordered mine with a length matching my flaccid state and it works well. Everyone's body is different. That's why having some experience with more affordable devices can be really valuable when deciding what to order custom. There's plenty of information in older posts about how to measure for these devices. Take the time to read through those old threads; they are quite useful. Don't hesitate to ask lots of questions and email the manufacturer as well.
> member_cd64cfabd2 wrote: > So what happens when you get aroused/erect? Is it painful???:?: It depends. When fully erect, I measure about 6 inches. My tube is 2-1/4" long and fits quite snugly. Getting an erection isn't usually painful. Sometimes there's a pulling sensation on the testicles that can be uncomfortable or even painful, but it doesn't happen often. For some reason, this rarely occurs during nocturnal erections; it mostly happens when I get aroused while interacting with my wife. We have a simple workaround for that situation:) It seems common among us that catching an erection early leads to less discomfort. If the tube is allowed to expand more (accommodating a larger size), there tends to be more discomfort, though this isn't universal.
> Atone wrote: > > It seems common among us that catching an erection early leads to less discomfort. If the tube is allowed to expand more (accommodating a larger size), there tends to be more discomfort, though this isn't universal. I agree. Early on, I experimented with a homemade version of a Houdini device. It forced my erection downward completely, which was quite uncomfortable. I believe catching it before it fully erects is the better approach.
"To everyone who has replied: How tight are the base rings on your JB devices? Obviously, they need to be secure enough not to fall off, but if they're too tight it hurts, right? My BC ring is quite a struggle to get into most of the time. I noticed the sizing options for the MM device and I'm curious about how snugly you should wrap the tape when taking your measurements. "
> member_cd64cfabd2 wrote: > How tight are the base rings on your JB devices? Obviously, they need to be secure enough not to fall off, but if they're too tight it hurts, right? My BC ring is quite a struggle to get into most of the time. Mine fits fairly tightly. I would opt for an even smaller ring, except for those annoying nocturnal erections. I think the real limiting factor is how large the ring needs to be to accommodate that. Having trouble putting it on might just come down to technique as much as size. Once I figured out the best method (for my body), I had no issues and could wear a significantly smaller ring than what I currently use.

I think the real limiting factor is how large the ring needs to be to accommodate that. Same here. I tried going one size down from what I'm wearing now but was in pain by around 4 am and whenever my wife decided to tease me. It became unbearable, so I went back up a size. The benefit of MM for me is that while the 1-7/8" ring felt slightly loose, the 1-3/4" one caused pain when aroused, so they custom-made an intermediate size for me. I strongly recommend ordering two base rings. As your body gets used to it, you'll find yourself starting with a larger one and gradually moving down over time.
> member_56a3d51043 wrote: > I strongly recommend ordering two base rings. As your body gets used to it, you'll find yourself starting with a larger one and gradually moving down over time. I agree with this advice. I started out wearing a 1-7/8" base ring. I also bought a 1-3/4" ring but could only wear it for short periods initially. Eventually, I managed to wear it full-time. Now, the smaller ring is actually more comfortable and feels more secure.:)
"Well, my Bird Cage ring is the 2" size and it's too tight. It really irritates my scrotum after a while. Fitting through the ring itself requires me to push *almost* each testicle through individually...and then getting the shaft through is somewhat of a struggle as well. I'm just curious how others with an MM device took their measurements and how snugly they kept the tape or whatever measuring tool they used. "
"I ordered the sizing ring directly from MM. I believe it costs around $20. "
> member_75c78a1ec7 wrote: > I ordered the sizing ring directly from MM. I believe it costs around $20. And the largest ring in that set is either 2" or 2-1/4"...since my current 2" ring feels too tight, a larger option doesn't really help me much. My main question is how to properly measure for an MM JB device.
> member_cd64cfabd2 wrote: > > I'm just curious how others with an MM device took their measurements and how snugly they kept the tape or whatever measuring tool they used. You probably haven't received many responses because I don't think we typically measure that way. Most of what I hear is people starting with a baseline and then adjusting up or down based on feel. The CB series devices are pretty good for most of us to get a sense of sizing. Somewhere, someone mentioned they now make larger rings for them; you might want to look into that.
"You could also reach out to MM directly and explain your situation. If you have an approximate idea of the size you need, give them a range. I was planning on trying something different, so he had me purchase three rings as samples. I found the one that worked for me, and he credited me for the other two when I purchased the device itself. I believe they carry standard sizes up to 3-1/2", but can likely source larger ones if necessary. "
"My local hardware store sells inexpensive steel welded rings (usually under $5.00). That might be exactly what you need to help narrow down your size. I'm also sure William at MM would have some advice as well. "

I'm also sure William at MM would have some advice as well. At first, I thought you were being a smartass, haha, but that's actually not a bad idea! It doesn't seem quite the exact science I was imagining. My 2" ring on the Bird Cage is definitely too tight...I'm pretty sure if it went up to 2-3/4" or even 3", I'd be fine either way. I was just more curious about how tight everyone else's rings are, especially those who wear their devices for long periods. My wife is getting more into locking me up now, so I want to ensure comfortable wear as long as she desires.

I'm also sure William at MM would have some advice as well. A marine supply store is actually an even better option. They tend to stock stainless steel rings rather than the chrome-plated ones you'd likely find in a hardware store. The selection is usually superior too.
