choosing the right cage

What’s the best way to choose a cage? Since they aren’t inexpensive, you can’t just keep swapping out different models. Also, how should it sit on your body? When soft, what percentage of the cage interior needs to be occupied, and is there space for expansion? I’ve checked my length multiple times and gotten readings between 2.5 and 3 inches. I haven’t measured when cold yet, so there might be some shrinkage as winter approaches. What other dimensions matter, any additional advice would be great

If your minimum is 2.5, choose the one that's 2 and 1/4 inches long. Trust me.

Smaller is always preferable, based on experience rather than just theory!!!

Custom stainless steel models cost $300+, while plastic adjustable ones cost about half as much. Additionally, there are now affordable metal options on eBay and DHgate priced around $30+. These might not be permanent solutions but can help you understand fit and comfort. You also need to consider whether this will be a 'part-time' activity for both of you or if it's meant for long-term commitment. For my part, I began with the plastic adjustable CB6000s. The adjustability allowed me to change the base ring size as well as the gap (the space between the base ring and the cage body). However, the cage length and diameter are fixed. Fortunately for me, those two dimensions were quite accurate, making it easy to transition to a custom stainless steel device. If I had only worn it during 'playtime' or part-time, fit wouldn't have been as critical, but since we both really enjoyed the effect on our relationship, ensuring comfort for 24/7 wear was important. I wore plastic for nearly a year before upgrading. Wearing an ill-fitting device is unpleasant even briefly. Others here will likely share valuable insights as well.

My advice is to measure precisely and choose slightly smaller. Pick up one of the budget-friendly steel cages from Amazon. Test it for several hours (or days if comfortable), and this will tell you exactly what specifications you need. After that, order a custom piece from MCN or MM.

The advice here has been solid. You must decide how the device will be used. Will it be for short intervals or long-term wear? I exclusively use Mature Metal now and am on my third unit, tweaking measurements each time. For continuous wear, I prefer the MM JailBird. It supports 24/7 use and is very easy to clean. That said, the experience gained with the CB 6K and 6Ks was invaluable. Regardless of which device you try, I recommend purchasing the sizing rings ($30) from MM. It's a worthwhile investment that helps determine if any 'off the shelf' models suit your needs. New devices are constantly appearing, so take your time researching. I agree with the suggestion to go 1/4" shorter; you want a 'cosy fit' with minimal room for growth during 24/7 wear. As mentioned above, getting the measurement rings is well worth it. I had my Jailbird fitted again by MM, and now it fits perfectly while remaining very comfortable for long-term use. Also measure over several days and opt for the smaller size in my opinion. I really appreciated working with MM; they are excellent—very responsive and helpful.

I've worn a Jailbird for a year now, and I have to say it is extremely comfortable. My only wish is that I could find one slightly shorter because the steel weight pulls down slightly, leaving just a bit of room at the end. However, since I ordered in size 4 and three-quarter inches, this may not be an issue if you are smaller than that. Still, I strongly recommend using a Mature Metal Jailbird; it's very comfortable and can be worn continuously.

Mr Cage, I believe MM can shorten your cage for approximately $125. That's a significant amount, but less than buying an entirely new device if the rest fits well. The most critical measurement is the cage diameter since it cannot be altered; you simply have to buy a replacement unit. Been there, done that, twice. Most MM devices hold their resale value very well, so even if you need to sell and reorder another one, you'll typically lose about $100-150 in total costs.
