I got a chance to experience some chillier air while running the other day, and I noticed a fascinating temperature gap between my body and the lock. Even though I felt quite warm and the cage was snug, the tip kept signaling that it was cold out there.
Now I’m curious: when temperatures drop into the 40s or lower, what is that experience like? Since I started this journey during warmer months, this will be my first autumn/winter season in the device.
Here where -25F is normal for winter, you learn to bundle up...especially if planning some time outdoors- silk base layer, a slightly thicker mid-layer, double-layer union suit, turtle-neck pull-over, followed by insulated pants/jeans and shirts, all capped with a down parka. Don't let yourself get into a spot where you need to pee urgently, because it takes a bit of effort to dig through the layers to find your way.
I was pondering that this weekend. During summer, my devices "hang" more because the skin is looser, especially as the day progresses. In winter, everything pulls up tighter. Actually, I'm considering distinct devices for winter versus summer, based purely on convenience and comfort.
I definitely notice a shift waking up in a cooler house. The balls pull high and tight until after a hot shower. Fortunately my sac has stretched enough now that there's no pain anymore. It just feels... snug. As Tom mentioned, that stands out sharply against the loose days of summer.
I shared this discovery a few times before, most recently in the member's lounge. Since there was mention of how long it takes to pee, I thought it fitting to copy it here ... "Currently sagging in summer heat, shoveling snow (living in the upper midwest) is the last thing on my mind. But besides thermal underwear, I discovered that I could wear my wife's short sports socks over caged junk. The ball sack goes into the heel and the cage fits into the rest. Voila! A small warning though: it fits so well you forget it's there; I've come in to pee only to end up with one wet sock! "
I wrote a blog post on this last week; I've been trying to determine what makes for a comfortable and wearable device. I found that the one I liked in June was a huge bother in August. Recently, when the weather turned chilly, I discovered I could actually wear the very heavy Fort with essentially similar (dis)comfort as the CB3000, at least most of the time. The concept of summer and winter devices cracks me up, but it makes sense.
Don't have that issue in South Florida

I've been out in the cold, shoveling snow for the last few weeks and encountered some uncomfortable shrinkage issues... turns out when it gets sufficiently cold between my legs, "high and tight" becomes "squished and painful" while caged. I had to stop halfway through the driveway to put on long underwear to warm the boys back up. My realization: the contraction strength of scrotal skin is strong enough to pinch the life out of my balls. Better not go swimming in sub-60F water while caged.

I've found that in summer I need a smaller base ring and a longer cage; in winter I need a larger base ring and a shorter cage. Also like you, I have found that in winter I can wear a heavier device since it is held tighter by the retraction of my sack. In summer I prefer a lighter device since it hangs looser and I don't want a heavy cage bouncing around when active.
I've been dealing with that quite a bit this winter as it's been unusually cold and I'm getting used to spending more time caged. Today was especially bad because I got out of bed to find the furnace had stopped working. My poor sack squeezed itself down to about the size and texture of a walnut!
Warm underwear. I switch from boxers to boxer briefs. If it's really cold, thermals. Warm up your body as much as possible and they will relax.
