Beginner Inquiries and Guidance for First-Timers

Alright, I’ll get the apologies out of the way first. Since I’m just starting out here, I’ve got a few beginner questions as well. I’m leaning towards picking up a Jail Bird cage from MM, but I need to clear some things up before pulling the trigger:

1. Is there really much difference between going with a single or double base ring?
2. How should I pick the gap for the cage/ring? I was planning on splitting the middle and opting for 3/8”, but is there anything else I ought to keep in mind that might not be obvious?
3. MM offers an optional extra ring for specific sizes. To me, it sounds like adding another ring would add security, though perhaps making teasing through a bit tougher. Has anyone here tried one and can share their thoughts?
4. Lastly, the security screw option looks less bulky and sleeker than standard screws, but how well does that hold up under pressure? Thanks in advance for all the input! I’m open to any advice or tips you might have:)

For it to fit securely and comfortably, factors like tube diameter, base ring size, gap width, and overall length all need to be spot on. Custom pieces carry a higher price tag, which means cheaper standard models are often better for testing out the waters first. While you can modify custom devices later, that will drive up costs even more. With that in mind, let’s look at your questions: 1. This really comes down to personal taste—some prefer doubles, others singles. If you’re a "high and tight" type of guy, I’d say a single ring is the way to go. Conversely, if you hang lower, a double ring might serve you better. 2. The 3/8" gap is usually where most people begin with their first device. Depending on your build, you may find that this needs adjusting up or down later. 3. Whether an extra ring works depends largely on what both the keyholder and wearer prefer. Some enjoy teasing through the bars, while others prioritize restricting access more tightly. 4. Security screws definitely help reduce bulk by lowering the profile of the device. That said, they do have a habit of vibrating loose over time. To counter this with my own unit, LRC recommended drilling an additional hole so I could thread on a numbered tag for extra security. Because of this, on my device, LRC wanted a second hole that allows a numbered tag to go through. A small amount of clear nail polish applied to the screw heads is all it takes to keep them from loosening up. I currently use an older stainless steel .44Mag snubby model; after enduring two cylinders full with semen loads, the screws had worked loose enough that the cylinder began jamming shut. A quick dab of polish on each head fixed the issue completely. If nail polish works for a heavy-duty piece like mine, there shouldn't be any trouble using it with security screws either.:mrgreen:

Finding another one would be nearly impossible because mine is an older S&W factory custom job that my brother and I bought together over thirty years ago. There may have been others like it produced back then, but I’ve only ever seen two in total (the pair we own).

In my experience with the JB model, that security screw has never budged. Even after wearing it non-stop for five to seven days straight around the clock, I find it fully seated when taking it off. It’s a bit of a mystery why it works so well for me but not others—it was simply just fine. I also had an additional bar installed on mine and discovered that during teasing sessions, my swelling fills up those gaps between the bars quite nicely, making it easy to tease through without much resistance. That said, this is purely personal experience. Before ordering my JB, I tested out at least five different cages, which helped me nail down a size very close to perfect right from the start.
