All I can say is that a 40mm ring worked well on the V2 for me, and it works just as well on the V3. I get the impression that the tube length affects the gap size in addition to the ring dimensions; with the nub on the 40mm, there is quite a small gap, which suits me. If you are finding the 40mm too loose, then the 36mm would be your best bet.
