I’d like to check the crowd numbers to determine which shape is clearly superior. For me, a round ring has a downside: it tilts sideways. However, its advantage is that it moves well during athletic activity. The oval’s benefit is staying in place; however, I find it can be more uncomfortable or cause pinching.
I voted for oval since I own both types. In my case, they both rotate so the top point ends up at roughly 11 o'clock (this happens because my right testicle is bigger than the left). Both shapes feel slightly different to me, yet I find them equally comfortable. Honestly, I'm unsure if I have a clear favorite.
The oval shape with its body-conforming design has offered the most comfort for me over the years.
I use a custom-designed ring that is... triangular? It resembles a squircle but with triangular elements. A trircle? hehe This matches my logo shape, which is actually where the logo design originated.

The ring on my cage is round, even though the cage itself is oval. I considered getting an oval ring but worried that the extra diameter would make movement harder. Fortunately, the sideways shifting hasn't been a problem for me.
After looking at it more closely, I shifted my preference from oval to a slight leaning toward the round ring.
oval
I've only ever used round rings; neither of my actual cages offered an oval option.
