Greetings all and happy new year. I’ve received a suggestion that an international gathering could be worthwhile. I reside in North Norway where I operate a guest house, though my roots are in Cornwall, England. My German is good and I know some Norwegian as well. For now, I’ll keep the name of the guest house private because we’re part of a tight-knit community; if word gets out that we plan something like this, it might hurt our business, but I’m up for giving it a go. The goal here is to gauge interest and see if you’d be willing to travel north during the winter season. Summer brings in fishermen and tourists who fill us up, whereas winters offer more privacy for guests. I think this is a fantastic concept. If we're aiming for the end of 2009, I should be done with my studies by then. How many people do you expect? I'd really love to meet fellow members here face-to-face, and having this much lead time gives everyone room to save up and arrange their schedules (or perhaps lose a few pounds!!!). I also plan on visiting the US at some point soon. The only hurdle is getting Pet into hypnotherapy so he can overcome his fear of flying; otherwise, I might have to go solo. It will be 900 NOK. Since exchange rates are fluctuating heavily, all prices will stay in Norwegian Krone. You can choose between a flat with two rooms and five beds or a house that accommodates up to ten people sharing the space. If you're okay with sharing accommodations, it's very affordable. The winter season has its pros and cons. Yes, it gets cold, but right now it's 6°C here in Norway, which is milder than much of Europe currently experiencing colder temperatures. The Northern Lights are only visible during winter because summer brings nearly continuous daylight (24 hours). You can't really enjoy snow activities like building snowmen when there isn't any snow on the ground. I'll upload a photo of the property to my profile soon.

Seeing the Northern Lights is high up on my "to do before I die" list. Which airport would be best for arriving? I've looked at flight options from the UK to various airports and they seem reasonably priced.

Narvik/Harstad is the preferred airport since it's the main one, though you'll need to get there from Oslo. The most economical internal flights are operated by Norwegian Airlines. One catch is that the airport is about two and a half hours away from our location, so we charge 800 NOK for transfer unless you rent your own car.

No, we never experience total darkness. We get about five to six hours of light, though the sun doesn't rise above the horizon during that time. This creates wonderful colors in the sky when it's clear; overcast days can indeed feel a bit dreary. You just need other activities to keep busy he he. Snow on the ground helps brighten everything up. The sun disappears from mid-November until mid-January, after which daylight hours increase rapidly. By late April, our days are already quite long.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I've visited Norway in winter and can confirm that while it is cold, it's not nearly as harsh as some of the northern areas here in the US. Goddess and I would definitely be interested in joining a group outing. Unfortunately, Her ability to take time off during winter is limited due to work commitments, so finding a date that works for everyone might be tricky:anim_43: There's also the financial aspect to consider, but with enough notice, we're confident we can save up.

February isn't suitable for us. I need to try and locate Goddess' calendar for next year to propose some dates. (please bear with me, as this could take a little time) Currency conversion: In early January '09, the rate was roughly 6.9 NOK per US Dollar. This means 900 NOK is about $130, which isn't bad at all for renting accommodation like this. We usually spend that amount or more on a cabin in the Appalachian mountains. Honestly, a reasonable hotel back home starts around $100. (For those of you across the pond.... 900 NOK equals just over 84 GBP) Here is where i got the exchange rates. The exchange rate fluctuates daily, so it's hard to predict exactly what it will be next year. Especially with how the American economy is performing!

I spoke with Goddess and finally convinced Her to sit down and look at the photos Locked shared. She was quite impressed, and we are definitely keen on this. Our schedules are still a bit vague regarding specific dates, but we know that Goddess can only take one week in March 2010, plus another week or two around the '09-'10 New Year holidays. Since our main goal is to see the Northern Lights, celebrating New Year there would be fantastic. We are considering a five-day stay in Norway. I wonder if that gives us enough time to explore the local area? Currently, airlines aren't booking too far ahead, but from what I've found, a round-trip ticket for two people from the mid-west to Oslo, Norway is around $1,500, and Oslo to Harstad/Narvik is about $330, or roughly $900 per person. This is still manageable since we have time to save up, but it will mean keeping other vacation expenses in check!

That sounds good. You are very welcome! We accommodate budget travelers well because our flats have fully equipped kitchens for self-catering. There is also a restaurant nearby. The only thing to note is that during the New Year period, days are at their shortest and the Northern Lights can be unpredictable; you need clear skies and sufficient solar activity. Last year we had exactly what was needed and enjoyed an excellent display on New Year's Eve, but this past year the weather wasn't as cooperative.
