Hi everyone, a few of you have sent me private messages about a custom CB3000/curve I built several years back, before I could justify buying the commercial CB2000. While browsing another forum recently, I stumbled across my original post from back then… and thought it would be fun to share.

The main tube is crafted from 40mm PVC conduit pipe. I used one of those 90-degree curved pieces and cut the primary section about halfway along the bend, which gave me a perfectly shaped curved segment.

Next, I employed “vacforming”—a technique modelers use to create small replacement parts for their models (like glass canopies). Essentially, I carved a wooden male mold in the shape of the curve.

Then, I took a flat sheet of PVC (cut from the back of an electrical J-box) and heated it until it just began to sag. You quickly press it down over the male mold and hold it there until it cools, which formed the curved head at one end of the tube.

The following step was cutting four circular rings from flat PVC; the sides of a 90mm J-box work perfectly for this. I used a standard jigsaw to cut them out. Once I had the circles ready, I took two and removed about a third of each circle’s circumference. This created the starting points for the hinge mechanism. I then fashioned a hinge using an stainless steel rivet. The other two rings were shaped and glued together with PVC cement (and let me tell you, that stuff NEVER EVER EVER holds firm). After assembly, everything was sanded smooth, and three holes were drilled at the top to accommodate the guide rails and locking bar.

I chose to glue the guide rails directly onto the side of the tube; they are parts from a bionic toy (for kids) and are extremely durable. The center pin also came from that same toy because it has a flange on the back that passes through the central hole in both the ring and the tube. I added spacers to the guide rails, drilled a hole in the locking pin for the padlock,

A few slots were cut into the top section for cleaning and lubrication. The head was glued on after cutting out a “pee slot” using that same PVC adhesive; honestly, it acts more like a welding compound than glue once applied—it’s not coming off!:) I spent hours sanding the internal seams to eliminate any risk of cuts or irritation.

The device was comfortable to wear and hardly noticeable under my work attire. Eventually, it was replaced by a CB3000 (which gave me some rash issues), and finally by a CB2000, which as you all know has been worn 24/7 since.
