Personally, I think you handled that very well. I would have punished him immediately when he mentioned wanting to read the story and denied him that privilege right away. However, your idea and punishment align perfectly with your goals, so this approach is even better. You noted he must sleep in the cage for the next two weeks. I assume he doesn't usually do that? Is there a specific reason why not? Honestly, if he's accustomed to the device, I can't see why he shouldn't always wear it while sleeping.

He knows your opinion, he knows he can read it (even if you dislike it), and he understands the consequences. Two more stories of that size and he'll be up to three months... All by himself:-)
