I'm relatively new here, but I can tackle this: It's what secures the cage to your body. If it's too wide, your balls might slip back through and you could lose the cage entirely. Too narrow, though, and you risk some painful pinching (I've dealt with both extremes). For most people, finding that sweet spot is a matter of trial and error. I've noticed anything under 12-14mm at its widest point tends to cause serious pinching. However, after trying out a plastic cage recently while water skiing in cold conditions, I saw the gap could stretch up to 30mm; combined with how cold shrinks things down, my balls would slip out one by one. Everyone's anatomy differs, so you might need more or less space depending on your build. Oh, and don't overlook the minimum gap around the sides (at least in my experience). I've had a few CCCs where that side area tightened up to just 5-8mm, easily trapping skin there. Keep in mind the whole setup naturally wants to shift off you—or you want it back on—so pinching is inevitable if the space isn't right. One more tip: A tighter gap that avoids pinching is generally better (ignoring escape risks for a moment). If the opening is too generous, your testicle tends to wedge in during shrinkage phases. Getting stuck halfway through is much more painful than not getting wedged at all. Hope this clarifies things.
