Deaf, and I would like to say so before the third message
- Wants
- a woman who will do this mostly in writing and does not mind saying so
- Experience
- Five years, entirely in writing until last spring.
- Around
- north of the river, London
I am deaf. I lipread well in a quiet room with one person and not at all in a room with music, which rules out most of the places this is supposed to happen and has ruled me out of a fair few conversations before they started.
Thirty three, north of the river. Five years of this, nearly all of it conducted in writing, which I did not choose so much as discover was the only part that worked. Last spring I met somebody in person for the first time and it was fine, because we sat by a window in the afternoon and she did the simple thing of facing me when she spoke.
What I want is somebody who will do most of this in writing and be direct about it rather than treating it as a concession. Long messages suit me. Instructions in text are clearer to me than instructions spoken across a room, and a dynamic run mostly on writing with occasional afternoons is not a lesser version of anything. For me it is the better version.
I should say what I am not asking for. I do not need anybody to learn a language for me, I do not want to be somebody's chance to be a good person, and I would rather not be asked in the first message how deaf I am, which happens more than you would think.
I am useful, punctual, and better at written correspondence than almost anyone I know. That is the offer.
Where this one puts you on the route
This is somebody standing where you are standing. Before you write a better version of it, the two stages behind you are worth a second look.
