Wanted · New York · Service and duty
I am strong, free most days, and good at the heavy dull jobs
- Wants
- somebody with a list of things too big for one person
- Experience
- Two years, one arrangement, almost entirely physical work.
- Around
- Queens, New York
The most useful thing about me is completely unglamorous. I am strong, I have a flexible schedule, and I do not mind six hours of dull physical work. In a city where everybody lives up three flights and nobody owns a truck, that turns out to be worth something.
Thirty three, Queens, two years in. My one arrangement was with a woman who was clearing out an apartment that had been in her family for forty years, and I spent most of a winter carrying, sorting and hauling under her direction. She decided what stayed. I did everything else. It ended when the apartment was done, which we had both known it would, and it was the most satisfying six months I have had.
What I want is that again. Not necessarily an apartment. Anything with a list, a standard and a person who says what happens to each thing.
I should be clear about what I am not offering. Nothing physical between us, nothing sexual, no interest in any of the vocabulary. I do not want to be addressed in a particular way and I would find it awkward. What I want is to be pointed at a problem and told to solve it, and to be told when I have done it wrong.
I will not accept anything for it. It is unpaid and that is the entire distinction between this and the job I already have, which involves moving heavy things for people who do not care whether I am the one doing it.
Where this one puts you on the route
Offering to be useful is a commitment measured in hours a week, not in enthusiasm. These three run from what that costs to what the first meeting looks like.
- 01 What a dynamic actually involves, shape by shape
- 02 The venue types that work, with honest odds
- 05 The first meeting, and why protocol stays at home

The request for money is the only signal that never lies
Wants: an arrangement with no financial element whatsoever

Sixty eight, retired, and the days are far too long
Wants: a standing obligation with somebody who expects me
-
Nothing physical, ever, and it is not a limit I am negotiating around
Wants: a household where usefulness is the entire relationship
