A woman sent me a critique instead of a rejection and it changed everything
- Wants
- one arrangement, written for properly this time
- Experience
- Three years, and one very useful paragraph from a stranger.
- Around
- Brooklyn, New York
In February a woman I had written to replied with four sentences explaining exactly why she was not going to answer properly. She said my letter was about how much I wanted this and contained no information about who I am. She said the word she used four times was intense and the word she never used was Tuesday. Then she wished me luck and that was that.
I have thought about those four sentences more than about anything else in three years of trying. She owed me nothing and she spent five minutes making me better at this.
Thirty, Brooklyn. So here is a letter with information in it. I am a nurse's aide, I work days, I live with two roommates in a building where the radiator noise is a running joke. I cook badly and I am learning. I read almost nothing and I listen to a great deal. My Tuesday is unremarkable and I would like somebody to have opinions about it.
What I want is an arrangement with duties in it and somebody who checks. Not an evening. A week.
What I do not want is to be intense at anybody, which I now understand was the whole problem. I am going to be dull and consistent instead, and if that is less exciting to read, I think it is more accurate to what I would actually be like to have around.
Where this one puts you on the route
This is somebody standing where you are standing. Before you write a better version of it, the two stages behind you are worth a second look.
