I will tell you exactly what makes me open the second message

Posted as good_letter_contains, 1 September 2026, from north of the river

Wants
one man who has read something and can answer a question
Experience
Nineteen years leading. Two long dynamics, the last of them nine.
Around
north of the river, London

Since I am going to be written to anyway, I may as well be useful and say what actually works, because almost nobody gets it right and the reason is not what men think.

It is not length. It is not politeness, though rudeness ends it. It is not a list of what you will do for me, which arrives in about eight letters out of ten and tells me nothing, because willingness is the cheapest thing in this entire world and every man has it.

What makes me open the second message is one specific true sentence about your own life that could not have been written to anybody else. Something you noticed. Something you got wrong. A fact about your Tuesday. It does not have to be impressive. It has to be yours.

Forty four, north of the river, nineteen years leading, the last arrangement ran nine years and ended when she took a post abroad, and we still speak. What I want now is a long dynamic with one man, built slowly, sitting alongside a life I have no intention of rearranging. Standing rules, real service, a place in an ordinary week. Nothing of mine is for hire and there is no money in this in any direction, which I should not have to write on a lifestyle board and do.

The wrong answer to this post is a letter that begins by telling me the post was well written. Tell me something true instead.

Where this one puts you on the route

If you read this one twice, you are at stage four whether you meant to arrive there or not. Nearly everything that goes wrong from here goes wrong in the first message.

  1. 04 Read her stated instructions before you write a word
  2. 04 Writing the first message, with two short ones in full
  3. 04 The seven openers that get deleted unread
