What I wanted was never the thing I kept calling it

Posted as wrong_word_decade, 31 August 2026, from the east

Wants
somebody who wants to be answered to rather than performed at
Experience
Ten years of wanting the wrong noun. Eight months of the right one.
Around
the east, London

For ten years I told myself I wanted to be dominated, and every time I got near anything that looked like that I went cold and stopped answering messages. I assumed I was a coward. What I actually am is somebody who wants to be accountable to another person, which is a plainer and much less cinematic thing, and which I could not name until last winter.

The distinction sounds like hair splitting until you have wasted a decade on the wrong side of it. Being dominated, as I had imagined it, is a thing done to you for an hour. Being accountable is somebody knowing what you said you would do and asking on Sunday whether you did it. The first one I found frightening. The second one I have wanted since I was about twenty two.

Twenty nine, the east, and I work in something with long hours and no supervision, which is probably relevant.

So I am looking for a woman who wants that arrangement rather than a scene. Standing expectations, a check that they were met, and consequences that are hers to decide. Very little of it needs to be physical and none of it needs an audience.

I do not want to be told I am really into something more intense underneath. I have had that conversation four times and it is exhausting. I know what I want now. It took ten years and I am not misplacing it again.

Where this one puts you on the route

This is somebody standing where you are standing. Before you write a better version of it, the two stages behind you are worth a second look.

  1. 02 Why this takes longer than ordinary dating
  2. 02 Being findable instead of searching harder
  3. 04 You are applying, not shopping
