Give me the phone calls, the complaints and the arguments with the landlord
- Wants
- a woman with a category of unpleasant tasks she avoids
- Experience
- Five years, two arrangements, both built on unpleasant errands.
- Around
- Queens, New York
There is a category of task that most people will do almost anything to avoid. Arguing with a building manager. The third call to a company that has already lied twice. Returning a thing that was wrong. Complaining, formally, in writing, and following it up.
I am unusually good at all of it, because I do not find it stressful and I never lose my temper, and because I am prepared to be extremely persistent in a completely calm voice for as long as it takes.
Thirty seven, Queens, five years in. Two arrangements, one of eighteen months and one of three years, and in both cases what I mainly did was be the person who dealt with the institutions.
What I want is to be handed that entire category. Not asked each time. Handed it, permanently, with the standing instruction that I do not need to check first and I report when it is resolved.
Around it I am happy to do the ordinary things too, errands and household work and the shopping. I do not want anything physical, I have no interest in protocol or titles, and I do not want anything bought for me or any money changing hands. What I want is for somebody to stop dreading a specific set of tasks because they are mine now, and to be told when I have handled one badly, which happens and which I would rather hear about.
Where this one puts you on the route
Offering to be useful is a commitment measured in hours a week, not in enthusiasm. These three run from what that costs to what the first meeting looks like.
- 01 What a dynamic actually involves, shape by shape
- 02 The venue types that work, with honest odds
- 05 The first meeting, and why protocol stays at home
Also in New York
-
I am strong, free most days, and good at the heavy dull jobs
Wants: somebody with a list of things too big for one person
-
The request for money is the only signal that never lies
Wants: an arrangement with no financial element whatsoever
-
I want to be depended on, which only works if nothing is owed
Wants: a woman who will simply expect things of me and give nothing back
-
Sixty eight, retired, and the days are far too long
Wants: a standing obligation with somebody who expects me
