He has read this post. He read the draft, he changed one word in it, and he will read the letters if I ask him to, which I usually do. That is the arrangement and it is not up for renegotiation by anyone arriving now.
Forty nine, the west, twenty years leading, eleven of them with the same man. We do not live together and we never have. He has a Wednesday and a Saturday and a set of standing duties, and there is a great deal of room around that which has been empty for a long time.
So I am looking for a second. Not a replacement, not a secret, and not a person who is going to spend a year quietly hoping to be promoted. Everybody knows about everybody here, from the first exchange, and if that is going to be uncomfortable it will be uncomfortable at the start rather than in the eighth month.
What I want from a second man is his own shape rather than a copy of the first one. Different days, different duties, and no comparison invited or offered. I do not run a hierarchy with numbered positions and I find the vocabulary of that faintly ridiculous.
Nothing here involves money in any direction and never has in twenty years. If you need to ask what the arrangement costs, the answer is that it costs a Wednesday, indefinitely, and it is not for sale at any figure.
