Electrician, thirty four, and I would like a house to look after

Posted as i_rewire_things, 25 August 2026, from the east

Wants
a household with things in it that need fixing properly
Experience
Three years, one arrangement, entirely practical.
Around
the east, London

I am an electrician and I am very good at it. I can also plaster adequately, plumb badly and put up a shelf that will still be there in thirty years. What I want is a house to be responsible for.

Thirty four, the east, three years in this. My one arrangement was with a woman who owned an old flat that was quietly falling apart, and over eighteen months I went through it room by room, on a schedule she set, reporting each thing as it was done. It ended when she met somebody and their life did not have room in it for me, which was fair and which I understood better than she expected.

Here is the part I have to say carefully. I will not accept anything for the work. Not money, not materials, not a favour returned. I buy what is needed and that is mine to do. The moment somebody starts keeping a ledger of what they owe me, it becomes a job I am doing at a discount, and I have no interest in a discounted job. I have a job.

What I want instead is to be told what needs doing and to be held to a standard. To be inspected. To be told a thing is not right and to do it again, which happens on a building site all day and means something entirely different in a house.

Not interested in anything that involves being watched, dressed up or photographed. I turn up, I work, I go home.

Where this one puts you on the route

Offering to be useful is a commitment measured in hours a week, not in enthusiasm. These three run from what that costs to what the first meeting looks like.

  1. 01 What a dynamic actually involves, shape by shape
  2. 02 The venue types that work, with honest odds
  3. 05 The first meeting, and why protocol stays at home
